History
Eglise et 1500 ans d'histoires du village Eglise et 1500 ans d'histoires du village The village of Saint-Dyé owes its name to Déodat, a hermit born in Bourges in the 5th century. As a child, he entered the monastery of Issoudun where he led an exemplary life and became friends with the priest Baudemire from Chartres. Together, they decided to establish a monastic presence on the banks of the Loire not far from Blois, not without having triumphed over the spirit of the dragon that had kept the place isolated until then. The fame of Saint Déodat began to spread throughout the country and attracted several visitors including King Clovis - no less! - on his way to fight the Visigoths. Saint Déodat gave him his blessing and recommended that he receive Christian baptism. Carried by prayers, Clovis managed to defeat the Visigoths. To thank him, he granted him land and a large sum of money before leaving for Reims to be baptized by Bishop Saint Rémi at the beginning of the 6th century. A basilica was then built, then a monastery in the 9th century. . The medieval boom of Saint-Dyé made it a prosperous port city, benefiting from the numerous river traffics and the proximity of the Sologne forests. In the 13th century, it was much more densely populated than today. The current bell tower of the church was erected in 1527 at the time of a resurgence of activity with no less than a dozen inns recorded during the construction of the gigantic castle of Chambord in its hinterland. The city acquired its letters of nobility by welcoming illustrious visitors: François 1er in 1523, D’Artagnan, Jean de la Fontaine in 1653, Satinslas Leczinski (King of Poland) in 1727 and the Marshal of Saxony.
